Duvet Care: Why Your Home Machine Might Be Damaging Your Bedding

Duvet Care: Why Your Home Machine Might Be Damaging Your Bedding

We spend nearly a third of our lives in bed, making our duvets one of the most used items in our homes. Yet, duvet maintenance is often overlooked or handled incorrectly. While many modern domestic machines have a "duvet cycle," most lack the internal volume required for a King or Super King duvet to be cleaned effectively and safely.

The Hygiene Factor

A duvet can harbour dust mites, skin cells, and moisture if not cleaned regularly. To truly sanitise a duvet, it needs to be washed in enough water to allow it to tumble and expand fully. In a cramped home machine, the duvet often remains folded or bunched, meaning the detergent never reaches the inner layers, and dirt stays trapped inside.

The Risk to Your Domestic Appliances

A water-logged King Size duvet can weigh upwards of 10kg. Most domestic washing machines are not designed to handle such a large, unbalanced load. Attempting to spin a heavy duvet can wear out your machine's bearings and suspension, leading to expensive repairs.

The Secret is in the Drying

The biggest challenge with home duvet care isn't the washing—it's the drying. If a duvet (especially one with down or feather filling) isn't dried thoroughly and quickly, it can develop a damp, musty smell or even mould.

Domestic tumble dryers are often too small to allow a duvet to "loft" as it dries. To restore its natural loft and cloud-like softness, a duvet requires plenty of space and high-volume airflow to dry completely from the inside out.

The Value of Professional Bedding Care

We recommend a professional clean for your duvets at least twice a year—once when switching from your winter tog to your summer tog, and vice-versa. A professional garment care service uses the spacious, specialized equipment necessary to deep clean, sanitise, and thoroughly dry your bedding, leaving it fresh, plump, and ready for a perfect night's sleep.
